Amigurumi: Happy Sunflower – UK Terms

This sunflower design is a wonderful addition to any windowsill and brightens even an office desk.

Happy Sunflower

Gauge is not that important with amigurumi.  Big or small they will be cute no matter what!  If your ami comes out larger or smaller, simply adjust the size of felt pieces cut out for the details on the Sunflower’s face.

**Rule of Thumb: softer, thinner yarns will make your ami smaller in size; rougher, thicker yarn will make your ami larger.  Just keep this in mind and be consistent.

Note:  You can use terracotta pots for this project but they are much more costly.

 

Skills Needed / Terms Used:

  • Magic Ring Technique
  • Crocheting in the Round
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Inc – Increase
  • Invdec – Invisible Decrease
  • Sl st – Slip Stitch
  • Ch – chain
  • FO – Finish Off, Bind Off
  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • Whipstitch
  • Straight Stitch (Embroidery)

Head Piece (Make 1 each in Kelly Green and Gold):

  • R1:6dc in magic ring – 6
  • R2:inc around – 12
  • R3:(dc, inc) around – 18
  • R4:(2dc, inc) around – 24
  • R5:(3dc, inc) around – 30
  • R6:(4dc, inc) around – 36
  • R7:(5dc, inc) around – 42
  • R8:(6dc, inc) around – 48
  • R9:4dc, (inc, dc) 3 times, 18dc, (inc, dc) 3 times, 14dc – 54
  • R10:4dc, (inc, 2dc) 3 times, 18dc, (inc, 2dc) 3 times, 14 dc – 60
  • R11:dc around – 60

sl st, FO, leave tail on Kelly Green piece to sew to Gold piece.  Gold piece, weave in end.

Stem (with Kelly Green):

  • R1: ch6 (leaving tail), sl st in 1st ch to make circle, place stitch marker, dc around – 6
  • R2 – R17: dc around – 6

sl st, FO, leave tail for sewing.

Petals (with Citron yellow, Make 13):

  • R1: 4dc in magic ring – 4
  • R2: inc around – 8
  • R3: (dc, inc) around – 12
  • R4: (2dc, inc) around – 16
  • R5: dc around – 16
  • R6: (2dc, invdec) around – 12
  • R7-8: dc around – 12
  • R9: (dc, invdec) around – 8
  • R10: dc around – 8

sl st, FO, leave tail for sewing petal to flower.

Leaves (with Kelly Green, Make 3):

  • R1: 4dc in magic ring – 4
  • R2: (dc, inc) around – 6
  • R3: (2dc, inc) around – 8
  • R4: (3dc, inc) around – 10
  • R5: (4dc, inc) around – 12
  • R6: (5dc, inc) around – 14
  • R7: (6dc, inc) around – 16
  • R8: (6dc, 2inc) around – 20
  • R9: 7dc, 2inc, 8dc, 2inc, dc – 24
  • R10: dc around – 24
  • R11: 9dc, 2inc, 10dc, 2inc, dc – 28

Dirt Ball – Bottom (with Copper brown):

  • R1: 6dc in magic ring – 6

  • R4: (2dc, inc) around – 24
  • R5: (3dc, inc) around – 30
  • R6: dc around through BLO – 30
  • R7: dc around – 30
  • R8: (4dc, inc) around – 36
  • R9-R10: dc around – 36
  • R11: (5dc, inc) around – 42
  • R12-R13: dc around – 42
  • R14: (6dc, inc) around – 48
  • R15-R16: dc around – 48

sl st, FO, weave in end.

Dirt Ball – Top (with Copper brown):

  • R1: 6dc in magic ring – 6
  • R2: inc around – 12
  • R3: (dc, inc) around – 18
  • R4: (2dc, inc) around – 24
  • R5: (3dc, inc) around – 30
  • R6: (4dc, inc) around – 36

sl st, FO, leave tail for sewing top of dirt ball to bottom.
