Simple Toddler Backpack
The next in my “Back To School” series of tutorials is a simple to make toddlers backpack.
The pattern is sized for a pre-schooler and I have kept it simple with a single zip, lining and one internal pocket.
- The FREE Toddler Backpack template can be downloaded below, or if you prefer not to swap an email address you can purchase it from the shop for 99p.
This is a very basic easy to make backpack, sized for a little one. There are many ways you can adapt this pattern, switching out fabrics, adding side pockets, embroidery or applique etc….
You may need some interfacing if you use a lightweight fabric but as its a bag for a little one two layers of cotton should be just fine. How heavy will a toddlers lunchbox and soft toys be? You can of course choose to use a canvas for a tougher backpack.
The finished backpack measures 11×13 inches and is 3-4 inches deep, depending upon your seam allowance around all the curves. I strongly suggest you check the suggested length against the distance for your own little one around their puffiest winter jackets to ensure you can adjust correctly.
Supplies Needed
- 1 yard of main fabric
- 1 yard of coordinating lining fabric
- 1/2 yard of heavy interfacing (optional)
- 2 backpack strap adjusters (You can get these from Amazon or Ebay for straps about 1″ wide)
- 1 zipper (needs to be between 11-14 inches, I used a continuous zip)
Cutting Out
Download the FREE Toddler Backpack, or buy for only 99p in the shop.
You will need to cut the outer/main pieces first, then the lining pieces to match.
If you are using fusible interfacing remember to attach/fuse it to the outer/main fabric BEFORE cutting the outer pieces.
