What goes into creating a Video?

The creative processes behind producing a stunning piece of video may be more complex than expected. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect when working with Fiery Phoenix to create your mini film.

Pre Production - generally an initial meeting, followed by the creation of storyboards and a final review meetings to ensure the direction and themes of the filming are as expected by the client. This stage also includes any site visits that are required to ensure all aspects, and any difficulties likely to be encountered during filming are taken into account.

We have been filming at an airfield and a live gig at an open-air concert for example - both entirely different locations with very different client requirements and logistical issues to be taken into account.

Production/Filming - The morning, day, week of filming. Depending upon the length of the final cut and the environment in which filming is to take place this timescales allocated may well be longer than you expect. There will be multiple filming for most shots - to ensure the perfect 'take' for your video. If filming in an outdoor setting there will inevitably be re-takes due to interruptions, external noises from trains planes and automobiles. The time of day and natural lighting will all have an impact too.

Post Production - This is the tedious editing part, working through all the images captured during filming, cutting, editing, adjusting lighting levels. Setting the timing, background sounds, voiceovers and music as required.

Review - The almost final cut of the video is ready for the clients' review The first cut is there so improvements can be made - don't expect perfection at this stage... Just remember most people who saw Star Wars at the first cut hated it!

Final Cut - the alterations have been made the video clip/mini movie is now ready to be shown to the world. The clip will include a title screen, production and end credits.

Some Questions to Answer before the initial Pre-Production meeting

• How long does the video need to be? (a short product presentation or longer training video)
• How many products are to be shown during the video?
• For each product/service what aspects need to be shown/demonstrated?
• Who is the target audience? (age, gender, location etc)
• What key words best describe the video and its effect on the audience?
• Will weekend or evening working be required? (filming on location outside normal working hours)
• Who will operate products on camera?
• Will a product model need to be hired? (Will someone be available to train them in product use?)
• Is a voice over required? (will an internal member of staff do this?)
• Is background music required?
• Is this a one off event or will re-takes be available?
